They retrieve passages.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Traditional search evaluates pages against each other using signals like backlinks, domain authority, and keyword relevance,\u00a0whereas\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sudhasolutions.com\/services\/aeo\">AI SEO optimization focuses on citation-ready content.<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">\u00a0<\/span>AI Overviews use a different mechanism entirely. When a query triggers an AI Overview, Google&#8217;s system\u00a0identifies\u00a0extractable passages across multiple pages that can support a\u00a0synthesised\u00a0answer;\u00a0and then builds that answer from the most credible sources it finds.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A page can hold position one for a query and still not appear in the AI Overview.\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0why businesses are increasingly investing in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/blog\/what-is-generative-engine-optimization-geo-a-beginners-guide\/\">Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) strategies<\/a><\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0not a contradiction.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0just two different processes\u00a0selecting for\u00a0two different things.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The evidence makes this concrete. Pages that perform consistently across multiple related sub-queries,\u00a0not just the original keyword,\u00a0are far more likely to be pulled into the\u00a0final answer.
